Adebayo Demands Inquiry Into Reported Enugu Political Shootings

By Atlantic Reports
Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate Prince Adewole Adebayo has condemned the reported shooting of NDC supporters in Enugu State, describing the incident as a threat to democratic participation.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by Mark Adebayo, Head of the Media and Communications Directorate of the Adebayo-Bugaje presidential campaign, he called for an impartial investigation and the prosecution of those responsible.
Adebayo said the supporters had gone to the airport to welcome their governorship candidate when the reported attack occurred.
“I’m saddened by the news of the shootings at the supporters of NDC whose only crime was to go to the airport to welcome their governorship candidate,” he said.
The statement did not establish the number of people killed or injured, identify the alleged attackers or provide an account from security agencies. Although Adebayo referred to “killings”, the casualty toll remains unspecified in the supplied account.
He urged the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) to protect citizens, candidates and political parties without discrimination.
Adebayo argued that publicly funded security institutions owed the same duty of protection to Nigerians regardless of their political affiliations.
“The targeted attacks on opposition members while security forces look away is a dangerous trend that must stop immediately,” he said.
“We demand a full-scale unbiased investigation into the Enugu killings and the perpetrators must be brought to swift justice.”
His allegation that security personnel failed to act was not supported by operational details in the statement. No police or DSS response was included.
The reported incident raises questions about the safety of political gatherings and the ability of supporters to participate in election activities without intimidation. An investigation would need to establish what happened, the casualties, who was responsible and how security personnel responded.
Adebayo also urged Nigerians to resist vote-buying and intimidation, and to protect the integrity of elections.
“Do not sell your future for temporary handouts and do not back down in the face of state-sponsored fear,” he said.
The statement provided no evidence establishing state involvement in the reported shooting.
Adebayo pledged solidarity with political groups working towards a peaceful and credible democratic process.
