APC Pledges Issues-Based Campaign, Criticises Atiku Over Tinubu Address

By Atlantic Reports
The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has pledged to conduct an issues-based campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election, focusing on its programmes and President Bola Tinubu’s record in office.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, the council’s spokesperson, Mr Dele Alake, said the campaign would highlight what the party considers the administration’s achievements and its efforts to move Nigeria “from reforms to prosperity”.
The statement also criticised former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, identified as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, for referring to Tinubu as “Bola”.
The council described the use of the President’s first name as disrespectful to his office. That characterisation represents the council’s position.
Dispute Over Political Decorum
The council said a former Vice-President seeking the presidency should demonstrate decorum, decency and respect for constituted authorities.
It accused Atiku of allowing political animosity and ambition to undermine the statesmanship expected of someone who had occupied the country’s second-highest office. It also argued that his conduct set an unsuitable example for younger politicians.
However, the supplied statement did not include Atiku’s full remarks or the context in which he used Tinubu’s first name. It contained no response from him to the criticism.
Despite its objections, the council urged APC leaders, spokespersons, members and support groups to extend to Atiku the respect and courtesies associated with his status as a former Vice-President and presidential candidate.
It said the party would uphold its progressive ideals and African traditional values of respect throughout the campaign.
Policy Pledge Awaits Detail
The council said Tinubu’s bid for a second term would centre on the administration’s achievements and the party’s plans for Nigeria.
The statement did not set out specific policy proposals, performance figures or measurable commitments supporting its pledge to move from reforms to prosperity.
For voters, the substance of an issues-based campaign will depend on how clearly the party explains its record, addresses the effects of its policies on households and businesses, and presents plans that can be assessed against defined targets.
The council’s appeal for respectful political engagement establishes its stated campaign standard. Its implementation will be tested by the conduct of party representatives and the weight given to policy debate as the election approaches.
