Cut Post-Harvest Losses with Better Storage — Agronomist Tells Farmers

Dr Makinta Abdulkadir, an agronomist and Managing Director of Kanem Agro Allied Firm, has urged farmers in Borno State to adopt improved storage methods to reduce post-harvest losses.
Abdulkadir made the call in Maiduguri, identifying moisture, pests, poor handling and inadequate storage facilities as the major causes of post-harvest losses.
He advised farmers to properly dry grains before storage and to use hermetic bags, airtight containers or improved silos to protect produce from moisture, insects and rodents. He also urged them to keep storage facilities clean, dry and well-ventilated, and to inspect them regularly for pests and water leakages.
The agronomist further advised farmers to sort their produce and remove damaged grains before storage, while maintaining appropriate moisture levels to preserve quality. He cautioned against mixing newly harvested produce with old stocks, warning that doing so could lead to cross-infestation.
According to him, improved storage would allow farmers to preserve their produce for longer periods and reduce the pressure to sell immediately after harvest—often at lower prices.
Abdulkadir called on government, development partners and private investors to invest in affordable storage facilities, particularly in farming communities, stressing that reducing post-harvest losses would boost farmers' income, improve food availability and contribute to overall food security.
He also urged agricultural extension workers and farmers' associations to intensify sensitisation efforts around improved post-harvest handling and storage practices.
