The Chairman of Igboeze North Local Government Council in Enugu State, Chief Chris Onyekachi, has called on newly inaugurated councillors to remain committed to their legislative responsibilities and work collaboratively with the executive arm to advance development across the council area.

Onyekachi gave the charge on Thursday in Ogrute, the council headquarters, during the inauguration of 20 councillors elected to represent their respective wards.

He said the legislative arm had a responsibility to perform its duties diligently and maintain a productive working relationship with the executive to improve governance and service delivery.

“I congratulate you on your election as the councillors from your various wards,” he said.

The chairman expressed his determination to move the council forward, urging the councillors to support his development agenda through cooperation and effective representation.

“My vision is to work with all my strength to move the council to greater height, so I expect all the councillors to work in synergy with me to achieve this vision,” he added.

He also advised the incoming legislative leadership to ensure that all councillors were carried along in decision-making and the discharge of their responsibilities.

APC Chairman Calls for People-Oriented Bylaws

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Igboeze North, Mr Solomon Ojiri, urged the councillors to work as a team and enact bylaws capable of positively affecting residents.

His appeal highlighted the importance of legislation that responds to local needs and supports development at the grassroots.

For the new legislative council, the challenge will be to translate its mandate into practical decisions that address community priorities and strengthen accountability in local administration.

Councillors Elect Legislative Leader, Principal Officers

Following the inauguration, the councillors held their first sitting and elected Mr Emmanuel Ugwu, representing Umuitodo Ward 3, as Leader of the Igboeze North Legislative Council, alongside other principal officers.

The oath of office and oath of allegiance were administered to the councillors by Mr Dukwu Gowon, Chief Magistrate of Enugu State.

Speaking after his election, Ugwu thanked his colleagues for the confidence they had placed in him and pledged to ensure inclusive leadership in the discharge of his duties.

He also promised that the legislative arm would maintain a harmonious working relationship with the executive.

“We commend the council chairman, who has been carrying us along, right from campaign to election and even after election,” Ugwu said.

“The legislative arm is fully ready to work with the chairman in his vision to leave Igboeze-north LG better than he met it,” he added.

Focus Shifts to Governance and Community Development

The inauguration was attended by the councillors’ families, friends, well-wishers and prominent personalities from Igboeze North Local Government Area.

With the legislative council now inaugurated and its principal officers elected, attention turns to how the lawmakers will fulfil their responsibilities through effective representation, people-oriented bylaws and oversight of local administration.

The success of the new council will ultimately depend on how well its legislative and executive arms work together while remaining responsive to the needs and interests of residents.
