The Murtala Muhammed Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service says it generated ₦165.79 billion between January and October 8, 2026, leaving about ₦124 billion to collect to meet its ₦289.79 billion annual target.

The Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Godwin Otunla, disclosed the figures on Wednesday in Lagos, saying the command processed 53,164 declarations during the period.

The reported collection amounts to approximately 57.2 per cent of the annual target, slightly below the 57.4 per cent cited in his account.

Despite the remaining gap, Otunla expressed confidence that the command would exceed its target before the end of the year.

October Collections Gather Pace

Otunla said the command collected ₦6.2 billion from 240 declarations on October 8, against a daily target of ₦1.16 billion.

The collection was more than five times the daily target. He described the performance as unprecedented in the command’s recent revenue history, although comparative historical figures were not provided.

Between October 5 and 8, the command generated ₦8.82 billion from 1,252 declarations against a stated target of ₦5.82 billion, according to the controller.

He put collections for October up to October 8 at ₦9.68 billion from 1,651 declarations, representing 40.3 per cent of the monthly target.

Compliance and Technology

Otunla attributed the stronger collections to improved compliance, deployment of the e-Customs platform and officers’ efforts to prevent revenue leakages.

“We will sustain transparency, deploy technology, and ensure no declaration escapes proper assessment,” he said.

He urged stakeholders to comply with Customs requirements and commended officers and businesses for their cooperation.

The figures show a strong collection day in October, but achieving the annual target will require substantial additional revenue during the remaining months. Otunla’s assurance remains a projection, with the year-end result dependent on subsequent collections.
