The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says it seized counterfeit alcoholic beverages valued at more than ₦2 billion during an enforcement operation at Trade Fair Market in Lagos.

In a statement posted on its X account on Tuesday, the agency said the raid followed intelligence about suspected illegal activities within the market complex.

Its Investigation and Enforcement Directorate reportedly uncovered more than 20 stores concealed within makeshift parking spaces.

Two Suspects Arrested

NAFDAC alleged that people operating at the locations were blending drinks, counterfeiting popular alcoholic beverage brands and revalidating expired products for resale.

It also reported finding stockpiles of banned imported products.

Two suspects were arrested, and operatives removed the seized goods from the complex, according to the agency.

The statement did not announce charges against those arrested. Their alleged involvement has not been established in court.

The valuation remains NAFDAC’s estimate. The account did not provide an inventory of brands and quantities or explain the basis for calculating the amount.

Questions About Products Already Distributed

NAFDAC warned that counterfeit, expired and unsafe alcoholic beverages could endanger public health. It urged the public to report suspected illegal production, alteration of product validity information and sales activities.

The agency listed its complaints line as 0800-1-NAFDAC, or 0800-1-623322.

The statement did not identify affected batches that might already have reached consumers, announce a recall or report illnesses linked to the seized products.

Tracing where the drinks were distributed will be important to establishing the scale of the operation and whether affected products remain available beyond the raided premises.
