The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has reached an agreement with China's National Immigration Administration to strengthen bilateral ties in migration management, border security, and the sharing of intelligence.

This is contained in a statement issued by the NIS Public Relations Officer, Mr Akinsola Akinlabi, on Sunday in Abuja.

According to the statement, the agreement followed a bilateral meeting between the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nandap, and officials of China's National Immigration Administration, held on the sidelines of the Sub-Forum on Migration Management Cooperation in Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province. The international forum, which ran from September 8 to 11, brought together more than 2,000 participants from 139 countries and organisations to discuss ways of strengthening international cooperation on migration management and responding to emerging transnational challenges.

Akinlabi said the bilateral meeting focused on issues of mutual interest and opportunities to deepen collaboration between the two immigration bodies. He noted that the proposed areas of cooperation include technical exchanges, information sharing, and capacity-building initiatives — reflecting the growing need for coordinated responses to migration-related security threats.

"The NIS presentation centered on Nigeria's role in combating document fraud and falsification of records, highlighting the efforts of the Service in strengthening document verification and border security. The Comptroller General reaffirmed the commitment of the service to strengthening international partnerships, intelligence sharing, and technical cooperation in promoting secure borders and effective migration management," he said.

Akinlabi added that the NIS also contributed to a roundtable discussion focused on Nigeria's role in tackling document fraud and record falsification, where the Service outlined measures currently being implemented to strengthen document verification and border security nationwide.

According to him, Nigeria's participation in the forum offered a valuable opportunity to share its own experiences while learning from other countries about emerging approaches to migration management, document security, and border control.
