The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticised what it described as the deliberate blocking of its presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, from reaching Yelwata community in Benue State, where he had intended to visit those affected by recent killings.

The party alleged that suspected thugs blocked Obi's convoy on Tuesday, preventing him from entering the community where more than 270 people were reportedly killed. In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC claimed the group responsible was led by an aide to Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia.

The party described the incident as troubling, noting that Obi's intended visit was meant to allow him to mourn with affected families, express solidarity, and listen directly to victims of the violence.

According to the statement, Obi said he arrived in Benue at about 9 a.m. with plans to visit those affected by the Yelwata killings, but his convoy was stopped from proceeding by individuals chanting, "Peter Obi, go back." He maintained that his visit was not politically motivated, stating that he had come solely to mourn with the community and offer support during a difficult period.

"I came to Benue not for politics but to mourn with our people, to listen to families who have lost loved ones, and to offer our solidarity," Obi was quoted as saying.

The NDC insisted that Benue residents, and Nigerians more broadly, deserve to live peacefully, travel safely, and farm their lands without fear. The party called on the Benue State Government and relevant security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible, and ensure the safety of citizens as well as leaders visiting communities affected by violence.

While acknowledging that access to Yelwata was denied, the party said its thoughts and prayers remain with the victims, their families, and the wider community. The NDC reaffirmed its commitment to continue advocating for the protection of lives and the safety of Nigerians nationwide.
