Spain Seeks Stronger Trade and Investment Ties with Nigeria

By Atlantic Reports
Spain’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Félix Artieda, has said relations between the two countries are improving, with prospects for stronger cooperation in trade, investment and other areas of mutual interest.
Artieda spoke on Monday at Spain’s National Day celebration in Abuja, attended by diplomats, business leaders and media practitioners.
“2026 has been a good year for Spain, a good year for bilateral relations between Spain and Nigeria,” he said.
The ambassador’s remarks expressed confidence in the partnership, although the account of the event did not identify new agreements, investment commitments or trade figures demonstrating the extent of that growth.
Economic and cultural opportunities
Artieda said Spain’s economy continued to perform above the European Union average and that employment had reached an all-time high.
He also said the country expected to receive 100 million visitors in 2026. That figure represents a forecast, rather than a completed annual total.
The ambassador highlighted Spain’s cultural heritage and its contributions to fashion, cinema and sports as sources of international appeal.
The Abuja gathering provided an opportunity for participants to build professional relationships and discuss cooperation. For Nigerian businesses and institutions, the practical value of closer ties will depend on accessible partnerships, market opportunities and clearly defined projects.
Peace and diplomatic cooperation
On international affairs, Artieda reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to peace and effective multilateral cooperation amid growing political divisions.
He expressed hope that forthcoming elections in Spain and Nigeria would be peaceful, describing Nigeria’s electoral process as significant to its neighbours and the wider African continent.
“We just hope that all this process goes smoothly,” he said.
Artieda also acknowledged the Spanish community in Nigeria and thanked embassy staff for their work in strengthening diplomatic relations.
Spain observes its National Day on October 12. In Abuja, the celebration offered a setting for cultural exchange and engagement around trade, investment, education and tourism.
The event ended with a toast to the prosperity of Spain, Nigeria and the other countries represented. The next measure of the relationship’s progress will be how diplomatic goodwill translates into concrete opportunities for people and businesses in both countries.
