Residents of Amuwo-Odofin received free legal advice on tenancy, property and matrimonial disputes on Saturday through an outreach organised by the Amuwo-Odofin Lawyers’ Forum in collaboration with the local government.

The initiative aimed to improve access to justice by helping residents understand their rights and the options available for resolving disputes.

The forum’s chairman, Mr Chris Aghaonu, said the outreach formed part of its annual community service programme.

He said lawyers advised residents on eviction procedures, emphasising that landlords should follow due process rather than take matters into their own hands.

“Knowledge is power, and information is key.

“We want residents to understand their rights and the legal steps to take when disputes arise,” he said.

The forum also attended to matrimonial disputes, including domestic violence complaints. Aghaonu said lawyers assessed individual cases and explained possible legal remedies.

He clarified that the free service primarily covered legal advice and mediation. Residents requiring court representation could incur professional and filing fees.

Aghaonu also urged tenants who had agreed to court-approved settlement terms to comply with those agreements.

One beneficiary, Mr Anthony Nwachukwu, said the assistance had helped him identify the appropriate steps for pursuing his complaints.

Another beneficiary, Mr Wahab Ibrahim, said the guidance had improved his understanding of legal matters and expressed satisfaction with the process.

The outreach gave residents an opportunity to seek initial legal guidance, with the forum distinguishing its free advisory services from the potential costs of pursuing cases in court.
