Former spokesperson of Nigeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, has been honoured with the 2026 Media Diplomat of the Year Award of Excellence at the 13th Bayelsa Media Awards (BMA), held as part of activities commemorating Bayelsa State's 30th anniversary.

The recognition celebrates Ebienfa's contributions to strategic communication, diplomatic engagement and the promotion of Nigeria's foreign policy priorities through effective public information management.

The award ceremony, streamed live on Friday, October 9, 2026, formed part of the celebration of Bayelsa's three decades of statehood, recognising individuals whose professional achievements have contributed to the state's visibility in diplomacy, politics, media and public service.

Ebienfa, who was represented at the ceremony by his foster son, Woyengiowoi Michael, described the honour as both an encouragement and a reminder of the responsibilities associated with communicating government policies and international relations.

Ebienfa Reaffirms Commitment to Media Diplomacy

In his acceptance remarks, Ebienfa said the recognition would strengthen his commitment to professionalism, strategic communication and the advancement of Nigeria's diplomatic interests.

He reflected on his experience as spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, describing the position as an opportunity to communicate Nigeria's foreign policy priorities and engage journalists on matters of regional and international importance.

“Serving as the ministry’s spokesperson provided me the opportunity to contribute to the communication of Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities, engage the media and articulate Nigeria’s position on issues of regional and international importance,” he said.

According to him, the experience demonstrated that diplomacy extends beyond negotiations, official meetings and engagements between governments.

“The experience reinforced my conviction that effective diplomacy depends not only on negotiations and official engagements, but also on clear, credible and timely communication,” Ebienfa added.

His remarks highlighted the relationship between diplomacy and public communication, particularly in an era when international developments and government positions are increasingly scrutinised through digital media platforms.

Strategic Communication Essential to Nigeria's Global Image

Ebienfa emphasised the importance of credible communication in strengthening public trust, countering misinformation and promoting mutual understanding between countries.

He maintained that effective media diplomacy could help explain government policies, communicate national interests and provide clarity on Nigeria's position concerning regional and international developments.

For diplomatic institutions, public communication plays an important role in ensuring that official positions are understood both domestically and internationally.

It also helps journalists and citizens assess government decisions and their implications for foreign relations.

Ebienfa said the award underscored the importance of communicating sensitive diplomatic and political matters with professionalism, accuracy and accountability.

“The award is significant given the critical role of public communication in explaining government policies, promoting diplomatic relations and ensuring Nigeria’s position on regional and international issues are effectively communicated,” he stated.

He also identified constructive engagement between government institutions, the media and international stakeholders as an important component of modern diplomacy.

Recognition Highlights Bayelsa's Contribution to National Public Service

Beyond Ebienfa's professional achievement, the recognition formed part of a wider celebration of Bayelsa indigenes who have contributed to public service and national development.

Created on October 1, 1996, Bayelsa State marked its 30th anniversary in 2026, providing an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of its people across different professions.

Ebienfa's recognition also draws attention to the participation of Bayelsa and Ijaw professionals in national institutions, including foreign affairs, public administration and strategic communication.

For a state whose communities have historically maintained strong cultural and economic connections with Nigeria's coastal and maritime environment, representation in national and international institutions remains an important aspect of its wider development story.

The award also illustrates how professional achievements outside a person's home state can contribute to the visibility of local communities within national discourse.

Media Diplomacy Goes Beyond Government Publicity

Ebienfa's remarks raise a broader question about the responsibilities of government spokespersons and public communication professionals.

While diplomatic communication helps governments explain their policies and defend national interests, its credibility also depends on accuracy, transparency and the willingness to provide timely information on matters of public concern.

In an increasingly interconnected information environment, misleading narratives can spread quickly, particularly during diplomatic disagreements, political crises and international security developments.

Professional communication therefore requires more than presenting favourable accounts of government activities.

It also involves explaining complex decisions, responding to legitimate public questions and maintaining trust through verifiable information.

Ebienfa identified these principles as central to his professional outlook, pledging to continue promoting accuracy, accountability and constructive engagement.

Bayelsa Media Awards Celebrates Professional Excellence

The Bayelsa Media Awards is an annual recognition platform established to acknowledge individuals and organisations whose activities contribute to the state's development and public profile.

Its categories recognise achievements in media, public service, community development and other areas of professional endeavour.

The 13th edition coincided with Bayelsa's 30th anniversary celebrations, giving the recognition additional significance for recipients and organisers.

Ebienfa commended the organisers for acknowledging professionals whose contributions have influenced media practice and public communication.

He said the honour would encourage him to maintain high professional standards and continue contributing to strategic communication and diplomatic engagement.

A Recognition With Continuing Responsibility

For Ebienfa, the Media Diplomat of the Year Award represents recognition of his previous responsibilities within Nigeria's foreign affairs establishment and an opportunity to reaffirm his commitment to credible public communication.

His acceptance remarks placed particular emphasis on the importance of accuracy, professionalism and the relationship between public trust and effective diplomacy.

As Bayelsa reflects on 30 years of statehood, the recognition also highlights the contributions of its indigenes working within national institutions and international-facing professions.

Ultimately, the significance of such honours extends beyond individual achievement to the standards they encourage in public service.

For media diplomacy, those standards include truthful communication, responsible representation and the ability to explain national interests without compromising professional integrity.
