The Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District Unity Cup 2026 is set to kick off on Sunday at the Eket Stadium, according to the Tournament Coordinator, Mr John Ekpenyong.

Ekpenyong disclosed this on Wednesday while leading members of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) on a visit to the tournament's sponsor, Sen. Ekong Sampson, in Uyo.

Also, the National President of the Grassroots Sports Federation (GRASOF), Ekpenyong commended Sampson for turning the tournament into a reality, describing it as more than just a competition for trophies. He said the initiative was designed to give young people a sense of belonging while helping to uncover hidden talents. "This tournament is also dear to our hearts because it will create opportunities for youths to move from idleness to productivity," he said.

According to Ekpenyong, participants stand to gain exposure, discipline, mentorship and economic opportunities beyond the game itself. He revealed that three standout players from the tournament would earn professional trials in Belgium and Germany. "I and my team frankly commend the sponsor, our dear senator for his visionary leadership and commitment to youth development," he said. "We thank him for his magnanimity and belief that from the grassroots, we can raise champions who will put Akwa Ibom South on the world map."

He urged all 12 local government areas within the senatorial district to fully support and participate in the tournament, citing its role in promoting unity, discovering talent, and fostering community development.

Responding, Sampson commended Ekpenyong and the LOC for their initiative and commitment to bringing the tournament to life. He described football as a powerful tool for promoting unity and peace, noting that the sport also creates employment opportunities and brings global visibility to individuals and communities. "We may not know the name of the Argentine President, but we all know that Lionel Messi is from Argentina. The same applies to Portugal. Many of us may not know the name of its President, but we know Cristiano Ronaldo. That is what football can do," he said.

Sampson urged the LOC to treat the tournament as an opportunity to strengthen unity among the district's 12 local government areas, stressing football's unique capacity to bring people and communities together. He described the Unity Cup as more than just a football competition, calling it a vehicle for unity, peace and economic empowerment.

The senator charged the LOC to uphold transparency and professionalism throughout the event to ensure its talent discovery objectives are met, and encouraged GRASOF to consider organising a similar football tournament for female teams within the senatorial district. "I must thank GRASOF for all you do to bring our youths together. Your commitment to grassroots development is deeply appreciated," he said.

The high point of the meeting was the presentation of jerseys to coordinators representing the 12 local government areas.
