Canada has committed C$80 million to support the Ebola response in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), according to Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) Director-General, Dr Jean Kaseya.

In a post on his official X account on Friday, Kaseya said discussions with Canadian public health officials in Montreal focused on containing the outbreak and preventing further international spread.

He said the Thursday meeting also addressed a reported imported Ebola case in Kenya, with both sides emphasising the need to accelerate regional response efforts.

The financial commitment is a funding pledge. The account supplied did not specify when the money would be disbursed, which organisations would receive it or how it would be allocated.

Kaseya identified the Canadian officials involved in the engagement as Nancy Hamzawi, President of the Public Health Agency of Canada, and Dr Joss Reimer, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer.

He thanked Canada for its support, describing international cooperation as essential to protecting public health and strengthening the response across affected countries.

Kaseya also said he would return to Africa in the coming days to help coordinate regional efforts with governments and partners.

His announcement did not include updated case numbers, deaths or details of the reported case in Kenya, leaving the scale of the outbreak and the immediate funding priorities unspecified.
