In a congratulatory message, AfBA President, Mr Ibrahim Mark, praised her commitment to justice, equality and human dignity.
“We commend Pillay’s enduring contributions to humanity and her continued advocacy for human rights and peaceful coexistence among nations and peoples,” Mark said.
He described her as a distinguished jurist whose work had provided an example for lawyers, judicial officers and future generations committed to protecting fundamental freedoms.
“Her remarkable career and lifelong commitment to the advancement of human rights will continue to inspire the legal profession and people across the world,” he said.
Mark also recalled Pillay’s role as a keynote speaker at the association’s Renaissance Conference in Harare, Zimbabwe, in 2016.
He said her participation remained a cherished part of AfBA’s history and reflected its longstanding relationship with legal figures committed to justice and the rule of law.
Pillay’s career has included service as United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and as a judge at the International Criminal Court and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.
