Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has inaugurated five sports courts at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure, as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots sports development, improve training facilities and create more opportunities for young athletes.

The newly inaugurated facilities are designed for Abula, beach volleyball, handball, basketball and volleyball, providing additional infrastructure for athletes, coaches and sporting organisations in the state.

Speaking during the inauguration on Saturday, the governor said the project represented another step towards improving sports infrastructure and encouraging greater youth participation in competitive sporting activities.

Aiyedatiwa, who was represented by his Special Adviser on Union Matters, Mr Bola Taiwo, disclosed that the government intended to extend similar improvements to other sporting zones across Ondo State.

He also acknowledged longstanding concerns about athletes' employment and welfare, promising that his administration would examine opportunities to provide more stable employment arrangements.

Delayed Sports Project Receives Fresh Attention

The governor revealed that the sports facilities had originally been awarded under previous administrations but experienced delays before the appointment of the current Chairman of the Ondo State Sports Council, Oladimeji Abimbola.

According to him, the appointment helped revive work at the complex, with contractors returning to the project site to complete outstanding assignments.

“This project is part of efforts by the state government to improve sporting facilities, promote youth engagement and create a conducive environment for athletes to develop their talents,” Aiyedatiwa said.

He commended Abimbola for what he described as his professional approach to managing the council and accelerating improvements at the facility.

“I am happy with the work Abimbola has been doing since his appointment as a professional to lead the council. It has helped to accelerate work at the complex.

“Abimbola also invited contractors back to site shortly after assuming office, which has resulted in visible improvements within a short period,” he stated.

Although the facilities have now been inaugurated, details of the original contract value, expenditure, reasons for the earlier delays and maintenance arrangements were not disclosed during the ceremony.

Such information would provide a clearer picture of the project's implementation and the resources committed to its completion.

Governor Raises Hope of Employment for Athletes

Beyond infrastructure development, Aiyedatiwa acknowledged concerns about the employment status of athletes representing Ondo State.

He noted that some athletes were not formally employed by the government, a situation that could affect their financial stability and long-term commitment to sporting careers.

“We learnt that most of these athletes are not full staff and have not been given employment. We will look at what we can do to employ them so that we can have more goals,” he said.

The governor's remarks raised expectations of possible improvements in employment opportunities and welfare arrangements for athletes.

However, he did not announce a specific recruitment programme, the number of athletes who might benefit or a timetable for implementing the proposed employment measures.

For athletes who depend on sporting activities for their livelihoods, stable employment, regular allowances, access to healthcare and adequate training support can significantly influence their ability to compete effectively.

Aiyedatiwa assured stakeholders that further improvements were planned for the sports complex.

“This is just the beginning. Within a short period, you will see a lot of things happening here,” he said.

He maintained that his administration remained committed to improving sporting facilities and creating an environment in which young people could develop their abilities.

Lawmaker Commends Investment in Youth Development

The Chairman of the Ondo State House of Assembly Committee on Sports, Mr Jide Oguntodu, welcomed the inauguration, describing the facilities as an encouraging development for sports administration in the state.

Oguntodu, who said he had chaired the legislative committee for more than three years, commended the governor for prioritising sporting infrastructure and youth engagement.

According to him, improved facilities could encourage young people to participate in organised sporting activities while helping athletes prepare for competitions.

He expressed optimism that the state government would continue upgrading the complex to improve Ondo State's capacity to host and participate in sporting events.

Reflecting on his personal connection to the area, the lawmaker recalled participating in sporting activities during his secondary school years.

“As a son of the soil, I was born here and participated in some sporting activities while in secondary school.

“What I am seeing here is beautiful, and I assure you that if the governor has done this, he will do more,” Oguntodu said.

His remarks reflected support for the government's initiative, although further investments would be required to address other infrastructure and operational needs within the state's sporting system.

Sports Council Chairman Promises Better Working Conditions

Earlier, the Chairman of the Ondo State Sports Council, Oladimeji Abimbola, said his professional experience had given him firsthand knowledge of the challenges confronting athletes, coaches and administrators at the complex.

Abimbola disclosed that he had spent 16 years developing his coaching career at the facility before assuming leadership of the council.

He explained that his familiarity with the sports complex had helped him identify areas requiring urgent attention.

According to him, the council is working to correct longstanding administrative and operational challenges while creating a more supportive environment for athletes.

“I am ready to correct all the mistakes so that the place can move forward, which will help us have a conducive environment,” he said.

Abimbola emphasised that infrastructure development must be accompanied by improved motivation and welfare arrangements if athletes are to achieve better competitive results.

“In sports, when you motivate them, they are going to do better. It is about motivation, and we have started that already. Our athletes are going to enjoy this time around,” he stated.

The council chairman pledged to continue prioritising athletes' welfare, although specific details of the measures already introduced were not provided.

Beyond Infrastructure: The Challenge of Sustaining Sports Development

The inauguration of the five courts provides Ondo State with additional facilities for training, recreational activities and organised competitions.

However, the long-term benefits will depend on effective maintenance, regular use, qualified coaching personnel and accessible sporting programmes.

For young athletes, particularly those from underserved communities, access to functional facilities can create opportunities to develop skills, participate in competitions and pursue careers in sports.

The inclusion of Abula, a traditional Nigerian ball game, also offers an opportunity to promote indigenous sports alongside internationally recognised disciplines such as basketball, volleyball and handball.

Nevertheless, the government has yet to provide detailed information about how the facilities will be managed, whether community sporting organisations will have access and how maintenance costs will be funded.

The employment concerns raised by the governor also remain unresolved, pending the announcement of specific policies or recruitment arrangements.

A New Opportunity for Ondo Athletes

With the courts officially inaugurated, attention now turns to how effectively the facilities will serve athletes and the wider sporting community.

The state government's commitments to expanding sports infrastructure and improving athletes' welfare will require sustained funding, transparent implementation and measurable outcomes.

For athletes who have trained under difficult conditions, the new facilities represent an opportunity for improved preparation and participation in competitive sports.

Yet the broader measure of success will extend beyond the inauguration ceremony to the quality of training, welfare support and sporting opportunities available in the months and years ahead.

As Ondo State seeks to strengthen its position in Nigerian sports, the challenge for the government and sports administrators will be to ensure that the newly completed courts remain functional, accessible and beneficial to the people they were built to serve.
