The Anambra State Police Command says it has arrested a 27-year-old man, Chidera Eleh, also known as “Timaya”, over alleged involvement in a series of robberies targeting Point-of-Sale (POS) operators and other victims in Awka.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the arrest in a statement issued on Friday in the state capital.

Ikenga said the suspect was arrested that afternoon as part of intelligence-led operations against robberies allegedly carried out using motorcycles.

Police described Eleh as an ex-convict but did not provide details of his previous conviction in the statement.

According to Ikenga, operatives recovered a motorcycle, an axe, a cutlass and other items suspected to be connected to the alleged offences. The statement did not specify the other items or explain how the recovered objects were linked to particular robberies.

The suspect remained in police custody while investigators worked to establish the extent of his alleged involvement and identify possible accomplices.

The statement did not disclose the number or dates of the robberies, the losses reported by victims or whether charges had been filed. The allegations against Eleh have not been established in court.

Ikenga quoted the Commissioner of Police, Mr Nnanna Ama, as reaffirming the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and bringing offenders to justice in accordance with the law.

Ama urged POS operators, commercial motorcycle riders and other business owners to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements or suspected criminal activity to the nearest police station.
