Secondary school students in Rivers are set to gain wider access to digital learning after Nigeria's First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, distributed iPads and cash to schools in the state.

The devices were handed over on Monday to representatives of secondary schools at the Government House, Port Harcourt.

The distribution was carried out under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) in collaboration with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Tinubu, who was represented by the wife of the Rivers Governor, Mrs Valerie Fubara, said the NDDC provided the iPads to help junior secondary school students access digital educational resources.

According to her, the devices come preloaded with educational applications designed to make learning easier and more engaging.

The First Lady cautioned the benefiting schools against selling the iPads, insisting they must be used strictly for educational purposes.

She also directed the schools to provide evidence of distribution and to ensure that the learning aids reached the students they were meant for.

Receiving the devices on behalf of her school, Mrs Gladys Ogudechika of Community Secondary School, Oyigbo, thanked the First Lady for the gesture.

Ogudechika said the intervention would strengthen the students' learning skills and improve their academic development.

Mr Boyle Dedeboma of Community Secondary School, Akinima, in Ahoada-West Local Government Area, also commended the initiative.

He said the pre-installed learning applications would be of great help to both teachers and students in the teaching and learning process.

In a separate gesture, Tinubu donated more than 10,000 sanitary pads to the Rivers State Ministries of Education and Health for distribution to female students across the state.

She said the donation was aimed at promoting menstrual health among schoolgirls.

The First Lady directed the ministries to distribute the pads to government schools, including mixed schools, with priority given to rural communities.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Dr Mina Ikuru, described the intervention as timely, saying it would help reduce the stigma surrounding menstrual health among girls.

Ikuru encouraged the beneficiaries to discuss menstrual challenges openly with trusted and appropriate persons, and charged them to become mentors and ambassadors of the Renewed Hope Initiative.

Her counterpart in the Ministry of Health, Dr Vincent Wachukwu, gave an assurance that the pads would be distributed in line with the First Lady's directive.

He said schools in rural communities would also benefit from the intervention.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Miss Chika Marvelous of Government Girls Secondary School, Rumuokwuta, commended the Renewed Hope Initiative for the support.

She pledged to use the sanitary pads effectively to maintain good menstrual health practices.
