Mrs Oluronke Esan, a pastor at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Solution Center, Ibadan, has urged girls to speak out about sexual abuse and seek support from trusted adults.

Speaking on Sunday to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child, marked annually on October 11, Esan said girls deserved care, respect and protection from mistreatment.

She described them as “precious, special, strong, purposeful, and wonderful”, encouraging them to recognise their worth and reject abuse.

“If you are sexually abused, don’t keep quiet; also, ensure you have a godly mentor you can look up to,” she said.

Parents Urged to Build Trust

Esan called on parents to be deliberate about their children’s safety, including exercising care over living arrangements and the adults who have access to them.

She urged mothers to become trusted mentors and confidants for their daughters, creating opportunities for conversations about their experiences and concerns.

“Mothers should be vigilant. Open your eyes and monitor your children well, especially girls,” she said.

She also encouraged fathers to develop closer relationships with their sons and guide their behaviour.

Alongside her safeguarding message, Esan advised girls on character, clothing and personal dignity. Those remarks should not be interpreted as placing responsibility for sexual abuse on a child’s appearance or conduct. Responsibility rests with the person committing the abuse.

Cleric Rejects Violence in Marriage

Addressing relationships within the home, Esan condemned husbands who mistreat their wives while demanding submission.

Citing Ephesians 5:22–25, she interpreted the biblical instruction on submission as inseparable from a husband’s responsibility to show love and care.

“You cannot be a husband who beats his wife and expect her to submit to you,” she said.

Her message centred on respectful family relationships and the need for adults to provide guidance and protection.

The International Day of the Girl Child is a United Nations observance promoting girls’ rights and drawing attention to the challenges they face. Esan’s appeal highlighted the importance of ensuring that girls can disclose abuse without fear of blame or dismissal.
