Google has opened its SynthID Detector to the public globally, allowing users to check whether images, videos and audio clips were generated or altered using artificial intelligence (AI).

The Communications and Public Affairs Manager, Google West Africa, Mr Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

Google said the tool, currently available in English, is designed to help users distinguish between human-created and AI-generated content and make more informed decisions about material circulating online.

How SynthID Detector Works

According to Google, users with a Google, Apple or OpenAI account can access the detector and upload media files for verification.

The tool identifies invisible digital watermarks embedded in AI-generated content produced by Google and participating technology companies.

Google said SynthID had so far been used to watermark more than 180 billion images and videos, as well as about 240,000 years of audio content.

The company said the detector can identify AI-generated media from Google and participating partners, including OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao. Apple is expected to join the initiative, according to Google.

Potential Use in Nigeria

The wider availability of the tool comes as AI-generated and manipulated content becomes increasingly common across digital platforms.

Kola-Ogunlade said the technology could provide an additional means for journalists, media organisations and members of the public to scrutinise suspicious AI-generated material, particularly as Nigeria approaches its next election cycle.

The tool could be relevant to efforts to assess the authenticity of images, videos and audio clips circulating online, although a watermark check is not by itself a complete determination of whether a piece of content is truthful or misleading.

SynthID Introduced in 2023

Google first introduced SynthID in 2023 as a system for watermarking AI-generated content using imperceptible digital markers.

An early version of the SynthID Detector was introduced for media professionals before the company expanded access to the wider public.

Google said the broader rollout formed part of its efforts to help people navigate an increasingly AI-driven online environment with greater confidence.

For journalists and other users, the development offers another technical tool for examining the provenance of digital media, while independent verification and other editorial checks remain necessary when assessing potentially misleading content.
