Headies Founder Defends International Expansion Amid Artistes’ Criticism

By Atlantic Reports
Music executive and founder of The Headies, Ayo Animashaun, has defended the decision to expand the Nigerian music awards platform internationally amid criticism over artistes’ participation in foreign award schemes and the Headies nomination process.
Animashaun made his position known in a series of posts on his Instagram Story while responding to concerns about the awards and the participation of Nigerian artistes.
He criticised musicians who submit their works to international award bodies but fail to enter them for The Headies, only to complain later when they are not nominated.
“Tom, Dick and Harry will submit entries to foreign award bodies that don’t even care about them and proudly post about it.
“But these same people won’t submit their entries to the Headies, yet they’ll complain about not being nominated. Funny!” he wrote.
His comments highlighted the importance of the entry process in determining which artistes and musical works are considered for nominations.
Animashaun Explains International Vision
In a separate post, Animashaun said the decision to take The Headies to the international stage was driven by the organisers’ vision and supported by sponsors who understood the objectives of the initiative.
“As long as those who benefit from what we do understand and appreciate it, the artistes understand why taking The Headies to the moon sometimes is the right move, and our sponsors see the vision, we can stand firmly by our decisions,” he said.
He acknowledged that people were entitled to express different opinions about the awards but maintained that the organisers would continue to stand by their decisions.
“Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but not every opinion carries equal weight. Posterity will be kind to those who see possibilities before they become obvious,” Animashaun added.
His remarks suggest that the international expansion is intended to advance the organisers’ broader ambitions for the awards, although he did not provide specific details in the cited posts about its measurable impact on Nigerian artistes.
Debate Over Recognition for Nigerian Music
The Headies is one of Nigeria’s prominent music awards platforms, recognising achievements across the country’s music industry.
Its international expansion has brought renewed attention to questions about how Nigerian musicians pursue recognition, the role of award submissions and the value of taking locally established platforms to wider audiences.
For artistes, submitting eligible works is an important part of participating in an awards process. However, broader discussions about nominations also involve the criteria used to assess entries, the transparency of selection procedures and the credibility of the recognition offered.
Animashaun’s intervention has added his perspective to that debate, particularly the relationship between supporting domestic awards and seeking recognition from international institutions.
The wider question is how Nigerian music awards can strengthen confidence among artistes while expanding their reach beyond the country. That will depend not only on international visibility and sponsorship but also on the perceived fairness, relevance and credibility of their nomination processes.
