The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Niger Command, has confirmed that one of its officers was killed during a surveillance operation along the Tungan Waya-Woko axis in Niger State.

Assistant Superintendent of Immigration I Ibrahim Babagiwa and an inspector were attacked on October 6 in Woko village, according to a statement issued on Monday in Minna by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSI Mukhtar Abubakar.

The command attributed the attack to bandits.

Abubakar said Babagiwa was killed, while the inspector sustained machete injuries but escaped. The surviving officer was stable and responding to treatment, he added.

According to the statement, Babagiwa’s remains were recovered two days after the attack. He has since been buried according to Islamic rites.

The account did not provide details of arrests or identify the attackers beyond the command’s description. It also did not state whether an investigation into the incident had begun.

Abubakar reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating irregular migration and carrying out its statutory duties despite security challenges.

The attack highlights the risks facing personnel conducting surveillance operations. Alongside the command’s pledge to continue its work, the incident raises questions about operational protection, emergency support and measures to reduce officers’ exposure to further attacks.
