Kano Begins Distribution of 3,400 Clean Cooking Stoves to Women

The Kano State Government has begun distributing 3,400 clean cooking stoves, donated by the Federal Ministry of Environment, to vulnerable women across the state.
The state's Commissioner for Environment, Water and Climate Change, Dr Dahir Hashim, flagged off the distribution on Monday in Kano.
Hashim said about 800 of the stoves had so far been distributed to vulnerable women across the state, out of the 3,400 allocated to Kano by the Federal Ministry of Environment.
He announced that Gov. Abba Yusuf had also given each of the 800 beneficiaries N25,000 to boost their small businesses, saying the intervention aligns with the government's broader mission to cut emissions to the barest minimum.
The commissioner noted that for years, women had endured serious health hazards from inhaling toxic smoke from firewood, an exposure he likened to smoking multiple packs of cigarettes daily. He said the new stoves would significantly reduce those risks and help protect women from respiratory diseases.
Hashim commended the Federal Government for the initiative and urged beneficiaries to put the items to good use. He added that the state government was also committed to solarising street lights and many Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), and thanked the governor for his leadership in combating climate change and empowering grassroots communities.
