Labour Party Calls on Tinubu to Sanction Governors Over Benue Incident

The Labour Party (LP) has called on President Bola Tinubu to take decisive action against state governors whose conduct could undermine Nigeria's democracy and constitutional rights.

The party made the call while condemning the alleged blockade of Mr Peter Obi's motorcade — the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) — as he attempted to visit Yelwata in Benue State last Tuesday.

In a statement issued on Friday, Ken Asogwa, National Publicity Secretary of the LP, described the incident as "shameful" and deeply disturbing. He said the situation would become even more alarming if allegations that the miscreants involved were sponsored by the Benue State Government were ultimately confirmed.

Asogwa questioned how a clergyman known for preaching morality could allegedly resort to violence, warning that similar conduct by other politicians should not be tolerated. According to him, the LP maintains that political differences must never serve as justification for violence, intimidation, or the suppression of citizens' fundamental rights, stressing that the Constitution guarantees freedom of movement to every Nigerian, irrespective of tribe, political affiliation, or religion.

"The Labour Party expressed concern that the Benue governor had allegedly failed to arrest criminals ravaging the state while targeting Obi during a humanitarian mission," Asogwa said. "We call on the authorities to protect citizens' rights to move freely, express political opinions and participate in public activities without fear. Democracy depended on respect for constitutional rights, rule of law and the freedom of citizens to engage in political activities."

He added that the party remains committed to condemning any attempts to weaponise state power against political opponents, and reaffirmed its pledge to continue defending democracy and constitutional rights across the country.
