New Zealand Visitor Arrivals Near Pre-Pandemic Levels

By Atlantic Reports
New Zealand’s international visitor arrivals reached 99 per cent of their August 2019 level in August 2026, bringing the country close to its pre-pandemic monthly benchmark ahead of the summer tourism season.
Tourism Minister Louise Upston said on Wednesday that figures from Stats NZ showed arrivals approaching the 251,100 visitors recorded in August 2019.
The comparison measures recovery for a single month. It does not establish that visitor numbers for the full year have returned to 2019 levels.
China and Australia Support Growth
Arrivals from China increased by 32 per cent compared with August a year earlier, the largest percentage rise among the source markets highlighted.
Australian arrivals grew by 4.9 per cent. Upston said Australia remained New Zealand’s largest visitor market and recorded its second consecutive month of record arrivals.
Visitor numbers from the United States, Malaysia, Indonesia and Japan also increased year on year.
The figures indicate strengthening demand across several markets, although the account did not provide their individual visitor totals or spending figures.
Government Recovery Target
New Zealand’s government set a target in 2025 to restore international visitor numbers to at least 2019 levels by 2026. Upston said the latest figures showed the country was on track to meet that goal.
She described tourism as New Zealand’s second-largest export earner, with one in nine people employed directly or indirectly in the sector.
For tourism businesses and workers, the approaching summer season offers an opportunity to build on the recovery. Whether higher arrivals translate into stronger earnings will also depend on visitor spending and the costs of providing services.
