The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms across parts of southern Nigeria from Monday to Wednesday, warning that strong winds could precede rainfall in affected areas.

In its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, the agency predicted a mix of sunshine, cloudiness and rainfall across the country. Much of the North is expected to experience sunny conditions, with isolated thunderstorms possible in Taraba on Monday and Tuesday.

NiMet urged residents in areas expecting thunderstorms to secure loose objects and take precautions against wind damage, falling branches and electrical hazards.

Monday: Rainfall Possible Across Southern States

The agency predicted sunny skies with a few patches of cloud across the northern region, with isolated thunderstorms and light to moderate rainfall over parts of Taraba during the afternoon and evening.

The North-Central region is expected to experience cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine.

In the South, NiMet forecast cloudy conditions with sunny intervals and possible thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall over parts of Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River.

Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are possible over parts of Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo and Delta.

Other states likely to experience these conditions include Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.

Tuesday: Thunderstorms Forecast in Parts of 16 States

Sunny skies with a few patches of cloud are expected across the North on Tuesday. Parts of Taraba could experience isolated thunderstorms with light to moderate rainfall later in the day.

NiMet forecast cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine across the North-Central and southern regions.

Thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are possible over parts of Ondo, Osun, Ogun, Lagos, Imo, Abia, Enugu and Ebonyi.

The forecast also covers parts of Anambra, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, Edo and Delta.

Wednesday: Rainfall Outlook Focuses on South-South

On Wednesday, the northern region is expected to remain sunny with a few patches of cloud, while the North-Central and southern regions will experience cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine.

Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are possible over parts of Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Rivers.

The forecasts concern parts of the listed states and do not indicate that every community will experience rainfall.

NiMet Issues Safety Advice

The agency advised motorists to avoid driving during heavy rainfall and urged residents to disconnect electrical appliances from sockets.

It also warned people to stay away from tall trees because strong winds could cause branches to fall or trees to break.

Airline operators were advised to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for operational planning.

Alongside the rainfall outlook, the agency warned that high temperatures could cause discomfort. It encouraged residents to remain hydrated, wear breathable clothing and stay in well-ventilated environments.

Members of the public can follow updated forecasts through NiMet’s website.
