The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a man suspected of burglary at the News Agency of Nigeria’s office in Awka, Anambra State.

The Anambra State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the arrest on Monday, saying the suspect, Sunday Habila, had been transferred to police custody for further investigation.

According to Ikenga, NSCDC personnel apprehended Habila on October 12 after he allegedly returned to the premises following an earlier burglary on October 6.

The suspect allegedly damaged window frames and attempted to remove copper wires, aluminium frames and other installations. These allegations remain subject to investigation.

Earlier thefts damaged the premises

The supplied account described repeated break-ins at the office before the arrest. Suspected thieves reportedly vandalised a Lister generator and removed its parts.

A refrigerator, air conditioners, furniture and electrical installations were also reportedly damaged or stolen during separate visits, leaving the office uninhabitable.

The account did not establish whether Habila was connected to all the earlier incidents. It also did not provide an estimate of the losses or indicate whether any stolen property had been recovered.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the alleged burglary. No charges or court appearance were reported in the supplied account.

Beyond the arrest, the repeated damage raises questions about securing the premises and restoring the office to use. No repair timetable or additional security arrangements were disclosed.
