The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Sokoto State has called for greater investment in girls’ education, saying keeping girls in school is essential to efforts to end child marriage.

The coalition’s State Focal Person, Dr Hassan Ibn-Attahir, made the appeal in a statement issued on Sunday to mark the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child.

The coalition’s commemoration, themed “Educate Her Today, End Child Marriage Tomorrow”, focused on the role of education in protecting girls’ rights and widening their opportunities.

“Ending child marriage is inseparable from keeping girls in school,” Ibn-Attahir said.

“An educated girl becomes an empowered woman who will build stronger communities and a brighter future for Sokoto State.”

He urged the state government, traditional and religious institutions, parents and development partners to make girls’ education a priority in their efforts to address child marriage.

According to him, access to quality education helps girls make informed decisions, develop skills and pursue economic independence. He also linked education to better health, personal development and stronger communities.

The appeal places school access and retention at the centre of the coalition’s advocacy. However, the statement did not specify the funding required, propose measurable enrolment targets or outline support for girls whose education has already been interrupted by marriage.

Ibn-Attahir said activities planned for the commemoration included school sensitisation campaigns, a radio discussion programme, advocacy visits to key stakeholders and a statewide social media campaign.

He reaffirmed the coalition’s commitment to ensuring that every girl in Sokoto had access to education, protection and opportunities to realise her potential.

The International Day of the Girl Child is observed annually on 11 October to draw attention to girls’ rights and the challenges they face worldwide.
