Trinity University, Yaba, Lagos, says it will graduate 323 students at its fifth convocation ceremony on Friday, including 79 first-class graduands.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Clement Kolawole announced the figures at a news conference on Monday, naming Osemen Esezobor of the Department of Computer Science and Osayuware Osazuwa of the Department of International Relations as the two students who achieved a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average of 5.00.

“Two of our graduating students finished with perfect CGPA of 5.00, a remarkable achievement that reflects their commitment to academic excellence,” he said.

Kolawole said 147 students obtained second-class upper degrees, 48 earned second-class lower degrees and 10 finished with third-class degrees.

However, those figures, together with the 79 first-class graduands, total 284, leaving a difference of 39 from the announced graduating class of 323. The supplied account did not explain the discrepancy.

Skills and employment preparation

Kolawole said the university had introduced compulsory skills acquisition programmes alongside academic studies to improve graduates’ employability.

He also said some students had secured international remote jobs through a partnership focused on digital literacy. The account did not specify the number of students involved, the employers or the nature of the roles.

The vice-chancellor said the institution had reorganised its academic units into four faculties and adjusted its convocation schedule to help graduates meet National Youth Service Corps orientation registration deadlines and admission deadlines for foreign universities.

He also announced that the Governing Council had approved the promotion of Modupeade Adetunji to Professor of Food Microbiology and Mycotoxicology.

Responsibility beyond graduation

Pro-Chancellor and Governing Council Chairman Samuel Olatunji said the university aimed to prepare graduates who would contribute to national and community development.

“We place a high premium on integrity, strong values, cooperation, reverence for God and community development as essential pillars for nurturing responsible graduates,” he said.

Registrar David Oyejide, represented by the Head of Corporate Affairs, Michael Bamigbola, said the institution had continued to grow since its establishment on May 20, 2019. He thanked stakeholders for supporting its development.

The weeklong convocation programme includes a lecture, the conferment of degrees, presentation of prizes and a thanksgiving service.

As the university prepares to celebrate its graduating class, clarification of the degree totals would provide an accurate record of the students receiving awards.
