Prof. Shehu Liberty has commended President Bola Tinubu, Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno and Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa for their contributions to the development of the University of Maiduguri.

Liberty, who chaired the inauguration of the newly elected executives of the University of Maiduguri Alumni Association's Borno Chapter, gave the commendation on Tuesday in Maiduguri.

The ceremony, organised by the association's Global Secretariat, took place at El-Kanemi Hall on the university campus and drew alumni members from across Borno.

Liberty described the event as historic, saying it came after the association held its first national-level election in more than 50 years.

He commended the association's Global President and the university's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mohammed Laminu Mele, for their roles in strengthening the alumni body.

The chairman noted the support that governments and individuals had given the university, describing such backing as especially important at a time when universities are being encouraged to look for additional sources of funding.

He recalled in particular Fintiri's visit to the university's Department of History while the governor was in Maiduguri for a meeting of the North-East Governors' Forum.

According to Liberty, the Adamawa governor donated N150 million to lecturers in the department and N20 million to students.

He also acknowledged the contributions of Tinubu and Zulum to the university's development, adding that alumni members would continue to seek ways to support their alma mater.

The association's Global President, Baba Shettima Kukawa, commended stakeholders who contributed to the successful conduct of the association's election.

Speaking on the theme "Building a Strong Alumni Network: The Role of Chapters in Advancing the University of Maiduguri and its Alumni," Kukawa pledged the global leadership's continued support for the Borno Chapter.

He urged the new executives to carry all members along and work together to advance the interests of the university and its alumni.

The newly inaugurated Chairman of the Borno Chapter, Dr Usman Ali Busuguma, thanked members, friends and family for their support.

Busuguma pledged his commitment to the association and appealed to members of the executive council for their cooperation in running its affairs.
