The Labour Party's presidential candidate, Dr Chibuzor Okereke, has called on Nigerians to take greater interest in political participation, insisting that electing capable officials produces clear, positive impacts.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Okereke stressed that political participation should not be left to a small group of people, arguing that citizens deserve a genuine voice in determining who represents them. He noted that political participation is closely tied to economic development, since political decisions ultimately shape the environment in which economic activities take place.

Okereke urged eligible Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards where necessary and actively participate in the 2027 electoral process. "I urged Nigerians to take greater interest in political participation, elected representatives at the federal, state and local levels make decisions that affect citizens' everyday lives," he said.

Endorsing Otti, Charting a Different Path for Governance

Okereke, who endorsed Governor Alex Otti of Abia State and other Labour Party candidates, said the party is committed to providing leadership capable of improving Nigerians' socio-economic conditions. He explained that the party's campaign is centred on demonstrating an alternative approach to governance, urging citizens to vote massively for the Labour Party across all upcoming elections.

According to the presidential candidate, political leadership should ultimately translate into tangible improvements in citizens' socio-economic wellbeing. Okereke said that, under his leadership, Nigeria would function as a true federation, with the local government system strengthened, a zero-based budgeting technique introduced, and a full reset of the country's institutional governance approach anchored on what he termed the "Nigerians First Vision."

Plans for Youth, Women, and Inclusive Governance

He said that if elected president in 2027, he would prioritise youth and women's development through inclusion and participatory governance. He further pledged to expand the scope of the Federal Character principle beyond ethnicity to encompass youth, women, and Persons with Disabilities, while working to transition Nigeria's economy away from palliative and distributive measures toward a fully productive one.

"Democracy should not merely be about elections but should translate into tangible improvements in people's lives," Okereke said, citing Abia State as an example. "In Abia, Gov. Otti through his developmental strides has increased the happiness index and human development index from zero to 99 per cent. Democracy must deliver happiness to the Nigerian people. Democracy must improve the lives of people."
