KolaDaisi University, Ibadan, will award first-class honours to 24 graduands at its sixth convocation ceremony, as the institution marks its 10th anniversary and records its highest number of graduates since its establishment.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olajumoke Morenikeji, disclosed this on Monday during a news conference ahead of the ceremony.

She said 224 students would receive degrees across 16 disciplines, representing a significant increase from the 52 graduands at the university’s maiden convocation in 2021.

Breakdown of graduating students

According to Morenikeji, 91 students earned Second Class Upper Division, 80 obtained Second Class Lower Division, while 29 graduated with Third Class degrees.

The 24 first-class graduands represent the highest category of academic distinction among the graduating students.

The Vice-Chancellor attributed the performance to the university’s teaching standards, staff commitment and improvements in its learning environment over the past decade.

She said the institution was established to provide quality education and produce graduates equipped with sound character and professional competence.

Accreditation and academic programmes

Morenikeji said the university currently had full accreditation for 22 programmes, reflecting its expansion across several academic fields.

She noted that the Council of Legal Education accredited the university’s Law programme in 2024, while its Nursing Science programme received accreditation on 31 August 2026.

The Medical Laboratory Science programme, she added, was scheduled for accreditation later in 2026.

The university currently offers programmes in humanities, management, social sciences, computing, law and health sciences.

The Vice-Chancellor also said KolaDaisi University had maintained a practice of holding convocation ceremonies in the same year students completed their academic programmes.

Obasanjo, Oloyede named for convocation

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has been named as the convocation lecturer, while former Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, will serve as the commencement speaker.

Morenikeji also highlighted the institution’s investments in career readiness, entrepreneurship training and partnerships with industry players.

She said these initiatives were designed to strengthen students’ practical skills and improve their prospects in the labour market.

VC seeks NELFUND extension to private universities

The Vice-Chancellor called on the Federal Government to extend the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) student loan scheme to students attending private universities.

Her appeal raises the question of how access to student financing can be broadened across Nigeria’s higher education system, particularly for students whose families face financial constraints.

The scheme currently provides an avenue for eligible students to access financial support for their education. Extending its coverage to private university students would require a policy decision by the Federal Government.

The news conference was followed by an exhibition showcasing research findings, innovations and project designs developed by students and members of staff.

As KolaDaisi University marks its first decade, the growing number of graduands and its expanding academic programmes provide indicators of institutional growth. Sustaining academic standards, strengthening accreditation and ensuring that graduates can compete effectively in the workplace will remain important measures of its progress.
