Nursing Mother Seeks Divorce Over Alleged Neglect, Assault in Kaduna

By Atlantic Reports
A nursing mother, Rabi Yunusa, has asked a Shari’a Court at Magajin Gari, Kaduna, to dissolve her 15-year marriage over alleged lack of financial support, physical assault and persistent verbal abuse by her husband, Usman Sa’idu.
Yunusa, who said they have four children together, made the request when the case came before the court on Monday.
She alleged that her husband failed to provide food for the family and frequently insulted, embarrassed and assaulted her over minor disagreements.
Wife Alleges Failure to Pay Children's School Fees
Yunusa told the court that she had been shouldering the family's financial responsibilities, including the children's educational expenses.
She alleged that her husband had failed to pay their school fees for several months.
“For months now, he has not paid the children’s school fees. I have been the one doing all the struggle. I pray the court to dissolve our marriage,” she said.
Husband Denies Allegations
Sa’idu denied the allegations, insisting that he provided for his family and had never physically assaulted or mistreated his wife.
“I always provide food for my family. I have never laid a finger on her, nor have I ever treated her badly, and our children are also going to school,” he told the court.
He alleged that Yunusa's relatives were influencing her against him because they disliked him.
The defendant also said his wife was currently living with her cousin and accused her of making false claims that damaged his reputation and repeatedly seeking a divorce despite his efforts to treat her well.
Court Adjourns for Witnesses
The presiding judge, Malam Mu’awiyah Shehu, adjourned the case until November 17 to allow Yunusa to present her witnesses.
The court is expected to hear further evidence before considering the parties' competing claims.
